External Rename Handler

External Rename Handler is a plugin that manages file and folder renames performed outside the application. Typically, Obsidian interprets such external renames as separate ‘create’ and ‘delete’ events, which can disrupt note organization and linking. This plugin addresses the issue by recognizing these actions as single ‘rename’ events, thereby preserving the integrity of your vault’s structure and internal links.

Key Insights:

  • Real-Time Monitoring: The plugin operates effectively only when Obsidian is running during the external renaming process. If renames occur while Obsidian is closed, the application will still treat them as separate ‘create’ and ‘delete’ events upon reopening.
  • Scope of Functionality: The plugin exclusively handles renames for files and folders that Obsidian actively tracks. Items outside of Obsidian’s purview remain unaffected by this plugin.

By implementing External Rename Handler, users can maintain a more consistent and organized vault, even when making changes outside of the Obsidian interface.

  • Customizable Default Filename: Allows users to set a preferred default filename; if left blank, the plugin defaults to generating a UUID.
